The Office of the Town Clerk
One of the most important positions in your local government is that of the town clerk. It is the agency responsible for transacting and recording the activities of the town government as well as the repository for the vital documents of the town residents.
Marriage licenses are issued by the Town Clerk Tuesday and Thursday between 3:00PM - 6:00PM, and are valid for up to sixty (60) days. There is a $40 licensing fee for marriage licenses. Two forms of identification, such as a driver¹s license or a birth certificate are required. At least one form of identification must have a current photo. Both parties must be present together in order to apply for a marriage license. If either party was previously married, a Death Certificate or all Certified Divorce Decrees must be provided to the Town Clerk as evidence that the marriage has been legally dissolved. After the marriage ceremony is performed, the completed license must be returned to the Town Clerk within 5 days.The Town Clerk will mail the Marriage Certificate directly to the couple or they can pick it up in person.
Genealogy Requests such as birth and death certificates are available as far back as the1800s. Marriage records are also available. All births and deaths that occur in the Town of Pittsfield are filed with the Town Clerk. Please contact the Town Clerk's Office for the latest fees and requirements.
Dog Licenses are required in New York State. All dogs must be licensed by the age of 4 months. Proof of a current rabies vaccination indicating it's expiration date is required. You must come in person to the Clerks Office to register your dog.
Town Board Meetings are attended by the Town Clerk. Records and agendas are kept by the Town Clerk.
Transfer Station Resident Decals are available from the Town Clerk during normal business hours. Please make sure you bring photo identification and proof of residency.
Freedom of Information (FOIL) The Freedom of Information Law (FOIL), Public Officers’ Law Article 6, provides that all records are accessible, except records or portions of records that fall within one of the nine categories of deniable records. Further information is available by contacting the Town Clerk.
